Geoffrey Arnold and Ben Gifford, black magicians, tour the ruins of Blowne House, blown away by air elementals at the end of The Burrowers Beneath. They recall how Crow turned the tables on Gedney, in the earlier story "The Caller of the Black."
Gifford reveals that he has followed Gedney's studies, but taken them even farther. He now not only controls The Black, he has become The Black, for all intents and purposes. He destroys Arnold. But the white magical wards on Crow's property turn the sinister magic on him, and Gifford too is destroyed.
An amusing little trifle. Nothing to get excited about here, but a harmless enough vignette.
